About The Councilor

John M. Krol, Jr. was elected Ward 6 City Councilor on November 3rd, 2009 and sworn-in on January 4, 2010. After running unopposed for reelection in 2011, he began a second term on January 3rd, 2012.

Born and raised in Pittsfield, Krol is a product of the Pittsfield Public Schools, from kindergarten to his graduation from PHS in 1996. He then attended the University of Pennsylvania, where he ran cross country, indoor and outdoor track, and was a 1997 USA Track & Field Junior All-American in the 10,000 meter run.

After graduating from Penn in 2000, with a B.A. in Psychology and a concentration in Communications, he began a career as a journalist in newspaper and then radio. After three years as the  news anchor at WNAW/WMNB-North Adams, he served as the Berkshire Bureau Chief for WAMC-Northeast Public Radio.

In 2005, Krol had an opportunity to return to his hometown as the Public Affairs Coordinator for the City of Pittsfield. The role combined a significant amount of constituent services, coordination and marketing of city events, and serving as a city representative on several boards and committees in the community. During that time, Krol served on the original Third Thursday committee, chaired the committee that organized Stephanie D. Wilson Day in honor of Pittsfield’s own astronaut, and developed the design and content for the city’s new website.

In 2007, Krol left City Hall to work for Berkshire Healthcare Systems, but has remained active in city government and in the community. He was the founding chairman of the Pittsfield Green Commission, which has a goal of reducing the city’s carbon emissions significantly, consistent with the EPA Challenge and Cities for Climate Protection protocols. The Green Commission includes several key department directors in the city, along with a liaison, James McGrath, that has allowed Pittsfield to be on the forefront of grant opportunities to increase the efficiency of city government, and in turn, save taxpayer dollars.

His interest in radio and serving the community was the inspiration for the creation of Good Morning Pittsfield, on WTBR 89.7 FM and simulcast on PCTV-17. Krol has hosted the program since November 2006, inviting public officials, both state and local, journalists, business and education leaders, and countless others. These discussions have focused on raising the dialogue on local issues, including city government, economic development, education, journalism, sports and an array of many other important issues.

Now President of OneEighty Media, a full-service marketing firm, Krol is also former board president of Pittsfield Community Television, continues service on the Pittsfield Green Commission, and is a member of Pittsfield’s School Building Needs Commission. He serves on the Council’s Ordinance and Rules and Community Development committees.

He lives in the heart of Ward 6 with his wife, Allison Johnson Krol and his son, Arden.
